By the year 1095, Feudal Lords had been dividing properties amongst their sons for generations. This had caused bloodshed between brothers over small pieces of land. In reaction to this bloodshed, Pope Urban II expanded "The Truce of God", a law that was originally proposed by Pope John XV in 958 and was first applied in 1027. This law outlawed fighting between Saturday and Monday and was later extended to begin at sunset on Wednesday and finish at sunrise on Monday of each week in 1042. In 1095 Pope John XV as part of the Council of Clermont proclaimed a weekly truce for all Christendom.
At this time it was customary for Christians to take a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. However the emperor of Constantinople, Alexius Comnenus was concerned about the Turks rapidly encroaching to the east of his empire, and had begun attacking pilgrims on their way to, and in, Jerusalem. As a result in 1093, he wrote to his friend Robert, the Count of Flanders, telling him about atrocities committed by the Turks on the Christian pilgrims. Robert then passed this letter on to Pope Urban II. After receiving the letter, the Pope then promoted a Holy Crusade to reclaim the Holy Lands from the Muslims.
The Crusades spanned almost 200 years with numerous campaigns, with many kings and knights fighting to rescue the Holy Lands.
